It takes about 10 minutes to download
this free program over a standard, 28.8
computer modem and telephone line. The installation

send instant messages!
Existing AOL Members will only need to
download and install AIM in order to use
it. All non-AOL Members will be required
to choose a screen name prior to downloading
the free software.

AIM FAQ's
How can I make
a picture on a website my Buddy Icon?
RIGHT CLICK the icon you would like. Select Save
Picture As..., and save it to your computer (remember
where you save it!). Next, in Instant Messenger,
click on one of you buddy's icons, and it will
take you to the Buddy Icon Preferences. Scroll
up to where it says "MY BUDDY ICON"
and click that, and select BROWSE, and find where
you saved your Grand Master Buddy Icon and select
it. Your buddy icon is set.
How much does AOL
Instant Messenger (SM) cost to use?
The AOL Instant Messenger (SM) service is free.
Do I need to Register
to use AIM?
You need a screen name to use AIM, but you may
already have one reserved. If you have a screen
name at any of the following, you can use the
same name with AIM: AOL, CompuServe2000, My News,
AOL Hometown, or the Personal Finance Channel
on AOL.com.
How old do
I have to be to use AIM?
You must be 13 years old or older in order to
use AIM.
Whenever I try
to go into Buddy Icons preferences, my software
crashes, and when I send an IM to other users
their software crashes.
One of your buddy icon images is corrupt. Take
the following steps:
1.) Delete the picture.id file (which is your
personal buddy icon) that resides in any of
the following directories (depending on which
version of Windows you have):
c:\Windows\aim95\screen name\
c:\Windows\Application Data\aim\screen
name\
c:\Documents and Settings\Windows
username\Application
Data\aim\
2.) If the problem still occurs, rename or delete
the entire picture directory (which contains
all of the icons you have set for your buddies)
that resides in any of the following directories
(depending on which version of Windows you have):
c:\Windows\aim95\screen name\
c:\Windows\Application Data\aim\screen
name\
c:\Documents and Settings\Windows
username\Application
Data\aim\
I am using
a Mac, and my buddy is not seeing my Buddy Icon.
Make sure that the image you are using for your
Buddy Icon is in one of the following formats:
BMP, GIF, ICO, JPEG, XBM
I am not receiving
Buddy Icons from a certain user.
Check the following:
• Make sure that the user's screen name
is in your Buddy List.
• Make sure that in Buddy Icons preferences,
you have the option set to accept Buddy Icons
from your buddies.
• In the Buddy Icons preferences, select
your buddy's name and click the • Clear
button (Windows) or set the icon to "None"
(Mac).
