Make Your Own MSN Messenger
Display Pictures - The Basics
If you want to make your own MSN Display Picture
- but don't want to be concerned with all the
technical stuff you don't really need - this
is the place for you.
MSN Messenger can use many different
kinds of picture formats: PEG, GIF, PNG, or BMP.
There is one restriction you need to keep in
mind - the picture will be resized by MSN Messenger
software to 96x96 pixels, regardless of the size
of the original. This can result in unexpected
results... So, it is best to control the final
appearance of your personal display picture
by scaling and cropping your picture before adding
it to Messenger to become your display picture.
Step One
Select the picture image you want to make into
your personal MSN display picture. As your
image will be very small when transformed
into your display picture it is best to use
an image which is sharply focused with good
image contrast. You could experiment with
adjusting the image to increase the contrast
and sharpening in you image editing software,
like Microsoft Paint, Adobe Photoshop Elements
or Paint Shop Pro.
Step Two
Select and crop the area of the picture you
want to make into your MSN Display Picure.
Display Pictures are square so make your
selection square. Then scale your image to
96x96 pixels. If the original picture is
very large I find that I achieve a better
finished icon if I reduce the picture size
in stages, sharpening at each step as the
picture is reduced to the final size. Save
your picture with a new file name.
Now you can add
your display picture to MSN Messenger or
perhaps you want to make your own animated
MSN Display Picture ?
